Professor Young-Ki Min of the Ajou University Medical School and his team have announced the results of research into the harmful effects of Taser guns. They found that if shocked by a Taser gun for a long period of time it can cause serious adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. The research was published in the online version of the Journal of Forensic Sciences on October 15th and is scheduled to be published offline soon.

Dr. Min and his team (Dr. Eun-Jeong Park and Dr. Sang-Cheon Choi) conducted the research by connecting 14 anesthetized pigs to a Taser gun and applying electric shocks for either five or ten seconds. As a result, a decrease in blood pressure and vascular resistance (resistance against blood vessels when blood flows out of the heart) occurred. The pigs exposed to the Taser gun for five seconds returned to normal while those exposed for ten seconds did not return to normal even after 30 minutes.

A Taser gun is an electrical gun that can discharge 50,000 volts of electricity and has a range of 6–7 meters. It is a non-lethal weapon designed to temporarily incapacitate an individual. Seven thousand Taser guns are currently in the possession of domestic police. 

Professor Young-Ki Min stated “This research has significance in that it proves for the first time in the world that prolonged exposure to a Taser gun can cause hemodynamic side effects.” He added that an updated user’s guide for the Taser gun is required to reduce possible side effects caused by its improper use.
